Mona's Gear - The Nubb Bass
June 2005
I was sitting around Sam's saying I was thinking about doing something other than just black basses that I had used for during the Marching to Mars tour. I was joking that maybe I would go with a pink one, since pink was about as opposite from my personality as I could get! No pinks, no ruffles or lace for me! lol
Anyway, as soon as I said that, Sam was all over it going "Yeah! do it, stretch out, and we can get Aaron (his extremely multi-talented son) to paint it for you." So I sent Aaron a pic of my tattoo and told him to go for it! I cracked up when I got it back and saw that he had played around with the character and even incorporated Bogus Otis into it. I can only best describe it as my tattoo drinking way to much Cabo Wabo tequila and kicking the sh*t out of Bogus Otis!
The pink "Woodpecker" was made for the Red Voodoo tour, and is apart of the Washburn XB900 series. The bass has a real growl to it, and has active electronics and really cuts through. The neck is made to the same specs as my first bass, which was a Fender P-bass. The neck is about halfway between a P-bass neck and a jazz bass neck, so it's neither too chubby, nor too thin. It's JUST RIGHT!
They are set up with a Buzz Feiton tuning system so they tune well and stay tuned.
Ampeg and Esh Basses
June 2005
The glitter pink bass is an Ampeg and is really fun to play. It has a shorter, yet full scale neck and is pretty light, which makes it very comfortable. I use this one backstage before the show to warm-up and sometimes onstage as well.
The purple one is an Esh bass. I first heard of this small company when we went to Frankfurt, Germany for the Musikmesse (NAMM show). I did a photo shoot for Ampeg with a guy who played one. At the next NAMM show in L.A., I found their booth. I again played one and it just felt and sounded great! They are handmade in Germany and the craftsmanship is excellent! It is an excellent recording bass as well. The pickups, which are Kent Armstrong give several sound options, both passive and active.
The Bass Rig/Rack System:
